As Spring comes into full bloom in
Louisville, it also means it is time for Farmer’s Markets. Farmer’s Markets are located throughout the
city and offer you an opportunity to buy fresh produce and other goods directly
from the farms that produce them. Shopping at Farmer’s Markets are a great way
to try new fruits and veggies, support our local farms, and buy in-season
produce that will be a healthy addition to your table. Here are a few tips for
making the most of the Farmer’s Market season.

here to find area Farmer’s Markets.
Come Prepared:
When you head to the Farmer’s Market, be sure to bring
cash. Many farmers and vendors are not
set up to take credit card payments. Don’t get caught without cash and
miss out on some of the goods.
Another tip, bring your own bags as some farmers do not provide
them. Be sure to wash your reusable bags every once and a while.
Bacteria can grow on the bags after repeated use. You do not want your
fresh foods to make you sick, so wash your bags, and also wash your fruits and
veggies before you eat them.
Plan Ahead for Meal Ideas:
There are so many great fruits and veggies available at a
market. It can be tempting to buy a lot,
but be sure that you have a plan for what you are buying so that you don’t end
up wasting food or money.
Find out which produce are in season and look for simple and fun
recipes to use. The UK Extension office offers wonderful resources on
local produce and recipes. Click here to access
this resource. Also, check out this
great resource on Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables from Cooking Matters that details what veggies and fruits are in
season- fruits and veggies will be cheaper when they are in season. Also, think about what you can buy now and
save for later when it might be more expensive.
Canning and freezing are great options for prolonging the use of your
in-season veggies and fruits.
Timing is Everything:
What is the best time to go to the Farmer’s Market? It
depends on your goal. If you want to have the best selection and ensure
your preferred produce is there, go early. Farmers bring a limited supply
and when it’s gone it’s gone. Getting there early means you will have
first access to the selection and can pick out the best produce options.
If you are looking for a deal, head to the market towards closing time.
You may not have a large selection as some items may have sold out, but farmers
will often give you a deal to buy up their remaining stock.
